Ending the trade rumors Karros signs three-year extension with DodgersPosted: Friday February 18, 2000 03:06 PM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Longtime Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros, who would have been eligible for free agency after this season, agreed Friday to a $24 million, three-year contract extension. Karros, who will earn $5 million this year -- the final year of a four-year, $20 million deal - receives a $1.5 million signing bonus, $7 million in 2001, $6.5 million in 2002 and $8 million in 2003. The Dodgers gave a $9 million option for 2004 with a $1 million buyout, with the year becoming guaranteed if Karros makes 500 plate appearances in 2003. There is a no-trade clause through 2001. Also, he will give $100,000 each year to area charities, including UCLA, Karros' alma mater; the St. Francis Medical Center; and Los Angeles County Schools. "Bob Daly and Kevin Malone deserve a lot of credit for getting this extension done before the start of training," Karros' agent, Jeff Moorad, said, referring to the Dodgers chief operating officer and general manager. "At long last, the Eric Karros trade rumors are behind us." Karros, the senior Dodger in length of service, hit .304 last season with 40 doubles and 112 RBIs -- all career highs. He also hit 34 homers, equaling a career best. Karros, 32, began his career with the Dodgers in 1991, and has been their regular first baseman since May 1992. He has hit 211 homers, tied with Steve Garvey for second on the Los Angeles career list behind Ron Cey, who hit 228.
