Mariners-White Sox called off due to cold weather

CHICAGO (AP) -- The decision by the White Sox to postpone Monday's game might benefit them more than the Mariners, but Seattle manager Lou Piniella wasn't complaining anyway.

The game between the White Sox and Mariners was called because of cold weather and will be made up as a doubleheader Aug. 8, starting at 4:05 p.m. CDT.

"I think it's very prudent on their part to cancel the game,"Piniella said. " know it's darn cold and it's miserable and we went through three days of this in Detroit and it wasn't any fun. This is a Green Bay Packer day."

The delay benefits the White Sox who had reliever Tanyon Sturtze, who has a 24.00 ERA, making a spot start in place of injured James Baldwin. Baldwin was hit in the chest by a batted ball in his last start and suffered a bruise, which has limited his mobility.

"t looks like hopefully (Baldwin) can make his next start," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said.

The postponement also allows shortstop Jose Valentin (strained right hamstring), Frank Thomas (tendinitis right ankle) and infielder Greg Norton (sore hamstring) time to heal.

"I needed the day off -- I'm happy," said Thomas, who was 3-for-11 over the weekend against Anaheim. "This will give me a chance to bounce back."

Valentin, who had missed the weekend series, was in the White Sox lineup Monday. Manuel doesn't want his team sitting too long.

"The only thing is, we like to play," Manuel said. "I want to play as many games as possible and avoid those doubleheaders."

The Mariners don't want to cool off, either. Seattle scored 47 runs in its three-game series at Toronto, getting 11, 17 and 19 in a sweep. Alex Rodriguez keyed Sunday's 19-7 game by hitting three home runs and driving in seven.

"It won't really bother me," Rodriguez said. "You take the day and you rest and get ready for the next day. Sure, in an ideal world I'd like to continue but it's cold."

Rodriguez went 4-for-5 Sunday, hitting a solo homer in the first, a two-run shot in the fourth and a grand slam in the eighth.

"It's one of those games where you look at the scorecard and you hope it's repeated again in your career sometime," he said.

Rodriguez is more impressed with the Mariners' strong start.

"The main thing is that the team is playing well," Rodriguez said. "We're playing hard more than anything, we're preparing ourselves. I feel we have a good team here."

Rodriguez was one of many who hit in the indoor batting cages at Comiskey Park when they learned the game had been called.

"These guys are ready to hit. They like to work," Mariners hitting coach Gerald Perry said.

Notes: Cal Eldred (0-0) will make his third start for Chicago Tuesday against Aaron Sele (1-0). Gil Meche will start for Seattle Wednesday. ... The White Sox reinstated outfielder Jeff Liefer from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte. Liefer was placed on the DL March 25 with a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. ... The Mariners went 8-4 against the White Sox in 1999.

Expos-Phillies washed out by rain

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Montreal Expos and Philadelphia Phillies were rained out Monday, the second time in three days they had a game washed out by the weather.

Monday's rainout has been rescheduled as a doubleheader with Saturday's postponement on Sept. 11 at 5:05 p.m. That had previously been an offday for both teams.

The Phillies head to Atlanta to begin a three-game series Tuesday with the Braves. Montreal heads home for a three-game set against the Chicago Cubs.

Orioles, Devil Rays rained out

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A steady rain forced the postponement of Monday night's game between the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The game will be made up on June 8 at 3:05 p.m.

Both managers reworked their starting rotation in the wake of the rainout.

Dave Eiland (0-0, 10.80 ERA), the scheduled starter for Tampa Bay on Monday, will be skipped in the rotation. Steve Trachsel will start on Tuesday night and Ryan Rupe will pitch Wednesday, Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said.

Pat Rapp, the Orioles' scheduled starter on Monday, will instead pitch Tuesday and ace Mike Mussina will work Wednesday. But the rainout enables Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove to skip Jose Mercedes in Oakland on Friday and instead use No. 2 starter Sidney Ponson.

It's the first rainout this season for the Orioles, who planned to honor third baseman Cal Ripken for his 3,000th hit in a brief ceremony before the game. Ripken reached the milestone Saturday in Minnesota.

After the postponement the Orioles shuffled their roster. Closer Mike Timlin and catcher Greg Myers, who have yet to play this season, were activated from the 15-day disabled list.

To make room on the roster, right-handed reliever Gabe Molina was optioned to Triple-A Rochester and catcher Willie Morales was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended elbow.

"It's been bothering him for a while," Hargrove said. "The doctor recommended he go on the DL."

Timlin was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 2 with an abdominal strain. The right-hander had not pitched since the team's last exhibition game April 1 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Hargrove said he expected Timlin, who had 27 saves last year, to bolster a bullpen that has struggled in his absence.

"He'll be a one-inning closer," said Hargrove. "There may be times when we'll run him out there for a hitter or two in the eighth inning. ... Hopefully, the first couple of times we'll have the luxury of running him out there for a batter or two with the game not on the line."

Molina pitched in one game, allowing three runs in one inning.

Myers suffered a pulled hamstring in the April 1 exhibition game when his spikes got caught as he was hitting a home run. He was placed on the disabled list the following day.

Astros-Dodgers game postponed by rain

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Daylong rain and the forecast for more prompted the Los Angeles Dodgers to postpone Monday night's game against the Houston Astros some 51/2 hours before it was supposed to begin.

The game will be made up June 8 -- after the Dodgers return from a three-game interleague series against the Texas Rangers, extending a 10-game homestand to 11.

The rainout was just the 17th in the 39-year history of Dodger Stadium. One game was rained out last year, against Colorado on April 11. That ended a club-record 856-game streak over a span of nearly 11 years without a rainout.

The teams, who have both lost two straight, are scheduled to play again Tuesday and Wednesday nights. It's expected that Octavio Dotel (0-1) will pitch for the Astros against Darren Dreifort (0-1) before Scott Elarton (0-0) opposes Los Angeles' Carlos Perez (1-1) in the finale.

The Dodgers, who have played only three home games and nine away, hit the road after Wednesday night's game for a seven-game road trip starting Friday night in Cincinnati.

Included is a game at New York against the Mets on Monday night, a makeup game for a contest scheduled at Shea Stadium on April 9 that was snowed out.
