Roundup Padres activate Gwynn from DL, demote RoskoPosted: Tuesday May 16, 2000 03:58 AM
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Tony Gwynn, hitting just .186 while struggling with an injured left knee, was activated Monday from the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres. Gwynn, with 3,075 hits and eight National League batting titles, had been eligible to be activated on Sunday, but the Padres decided to give him a few more days off to rest his inflamed left knee. The Padres were off Monday and begin a six-game trip at Florida on Tuesday night. Gwynn was put on the DL on April 30, retroactive to the 29th, as his left knee continued to bother him. Gwynn has had the knee drained five times since zspring training. He has had five operations on the knee through his career and, with most of the cartilage gone, the joint is basically bone-on-bone. While on the DL, Gwynn was treated with artificial cartilage. Gwynn has appeared in only 13 of San Diego's first 37 games, starting 11. A lifetime .339 hitter, he has eight hits in 43 at-bats this season, with three doubles and seven RBIs. To make room for Gwynn, the Padres optioned infielder-outfielder John Roskos to Triple-A Las Vegas. Roskos went 0-for-10 in six games during his second stint with the Padres. Originally promoted on April 11, Roskos went a combined 1-for-25 with an RBI in 13 games overall. At Las Vegas, he is batting .432 (16-for-37) with two homers and 12 RBIs in 11 games. Angels pitcher out of intensive careANAHEM, Calif. (AP) -- Anaheim Angels pitcher Kent Mercker, hospitalized with a cerebral hemorrhage, was moved from intensive care to a private room Monday. Mercker, 32, will remain in UC-Irvine Medical Center for observation and evaluation, and is scheduled to undergo further tests within the next week, the Angels said. Teammates and team officials who have visited Mercker reported that he was alert and in good spirits. Mercker threw 30 pitches against Texas on Thursday night in his second start of the season before sinking to one knee and leaving under his own power, complaining of headaches and dizziness. He was hospitalized that night. There has been no indication whether Mercker may be able to continue his career. The 12-year veteran, who pitched a no-hitter for Atlanta on April 8, 1994, at Los Angeles, is 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA. Expos' Urbina on trial on assault chargeMONTREAL (AP) -- Montreal Expos reliever Ugueth Urbina was in court Monday, charged with punching a man without provocation at a nightclub last September. Eloy Ledesma said Urbina came up behind him, tapped him on his left shoulder and punched him in the face when he turned around. "It happened so fast I didn't have time to react," said Ledesma, who was testifying on the first day of the trial. Urbina, charged with assault causing bodily harm, is pleading not guilty. He has not commented publicly on the case. Ledesma said his only contact with Urbina had been exchanging simple greetings at clubs. Urbina, who led the National League with 41 saves last season and who has eight this season, is sidelined with an elbow injury. Right-hander Gene Altman completes Ochoa dealCINCINNATI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds traded minor league pitcher Gene Altman to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday to complete the January deal in which the Reds acquired outfielder Alex Ochoa. Altman is 2-0 with a 3.78 earned run average with Class A Dayton. Ochoa was acquired from the Brewers in exchange for outfielder Mark Sweeney and a player to be named. Ochoa is hitting .319 (15-for-47) in his backup role with the Reds. Angels' Vaughn named AL Player of the WeekNEW YORK (Ticker) -- A surge of power by Mo Vaughn brought the Anaheim Angels first baseman American League Player of the Week honors. Vaughn hit six homers, including a pair in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Texas Rangers, and drove in 11 runs for the period ending Sunday. Vaughn hit .393 (11-for-28) with three doubles and three walks. Also considered for the award were Alex Rodriguez of Seattle, Mike Sweeney of Kansas City, Pedro Martinez of Boston and Rick Helling of Texas. Helton named NL Player of the WeekNEW YORK (Ticker) -- Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies was named National League Player of the Week today, but it came at a price. The first baseman hit a robust .609 (14-for-23) with four homers and nine RBI as the Rockies won four times in six games. He recorded 30 total bases for a 1.304 slugging percentage. The former University of Tennessee quarterback ended the weekend with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning that broke a tie and lifted the Rockies to an 11-7 win over San Francisco on Sunday. Helton, however, left the game with a strained right hamstring following the hit and is expected to be sidelined for a few days. Also considered for this week's honor were Jay Bell and Tony Womack of Arizona, Henry Blanco and Mark Loretta of Milwaukee, Wil Cordero of Pittsburgh, Todd Hundley of Los Angeles and Mike Hampton of the New York Mets.
