NEW YORK (AP) -- Gilbert Hodges, the grandson of baseball great Gil Hodges, was arrested after a man riding on the hood of his car fell off and was killed.

Hodges, 27, of Brooklyn, was charged Friday with second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence. His 1996 Range Rover was seized by police.

Hodges and the victim, Lance Marino, 27, of Brooklyn, were in the Northside Cafe in Brooklyn about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. When they left, Marino laid down on top of Hodges' car and Hodges began driving. He was not speeding, but police did not know how fast he was going.

After about a mile, Marino fell from the car at the intersection of Kent and Division avenues in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, striking his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police officer saw Marino in the street and called for an ambulance. Hodges was arrested at the scene.

Hodges has numerous driving violations for speeding and for driving without a license, according to motor vehicle records.

His grandfather, played first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers and hit 370 home runs. Gil Hodges also managed the 1969 Miracle Mets to the World Series title. He died in 1972 of a heart attack at the age of 47.

Marino was the brother of Craig Marino, a reputed soldier in the Lucchese crime family, authorities said.
