Jordan out with sore shoulder, Millwood to miss start

ATLANTA (AP) -- Braves outfielder Brian Jordan wasn't in the lineup for Tuesday night's game against Cincinnati because of an ailing right shoulder, and pitcher Kevin Millwood will miss his next start after breaking his nose.

Jordan, whose shoulder has been a nuisance much of the season, became concerned when a diving catch in the first inning of Monday night's 6-3 loss to the Reds caused intense pain.

"After that dive, I couldn't even throw," he said. "I had to just lob the ball. I was hoping they wouldn't hit the ball to me. There was no way I could throw anyone out."

Jordan remained in the game but went to the hospital afterward for an MRI, which found the damage wasn't much more serious than he already knew. He will need surgery after the season for a partially torn rotator cuff and frayed labrum.

"But I will finish up and do whatever I can do to help the team," said Jordan, listed as day to day. "The cutoff man will just have to come out a little farther in the outfield."

He wanted to play Tuesday but doctors advised manager Bobby Cox to give the outfielder some time off. Jordan said the shoulder only bothers him when he throws, so he would be available for pinch hitting.

Reggie Sanders started in place of Jordan, who was hitting only .214 since the end of June. Overall, he was at .266 with 16 homers and 65 RBIs.

Millwood sustained a broken nose and deviated septum while working on his bunting in the indoor batting cage at Turner Field before Monday night's game. The ball bounced off the ground and struck him in the face.

Millwood wasn't at the ballpark Tuesday and won't pitch as scheduled Thursday in the finale of the four-game series against the Reds. The Braves are hopeful he will miss only one start.

Terry Mulholland, who spent much of the season in rotation, could come out of the bullpen to fill in. Cox also had the option of using John Burkett on three days' rest.

"We'll see how it goes," the manager said. "I like Terry where is right now."

Millwood finished third in the NL Cy Young balloting a year ago, but has struggled this season with an 8-9 record and 4.71 ERA.
