Piazza, Bonds win eighth Silver Slugger awards

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza and San Francisco outfielder Barry Bonds won their eighth Silver Slugger awards Wednesday.

Seattle shortstop Alex Rodriguez, Cleveland second baseman Roberto Alomar, Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa and Chicago White Sox designated hitter Frank Thomas all were picked for the fourth time on the team announced Wednesday by Hillerich & Bradsby Co., the maker of Louisville Sluggers.

Cleveland outfielder Manny Ramirez was picked for the third time, while Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado, Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, Montreal outfielder Vladimir Guerrero and Mets pitcher Mike Hampton were selected for the second time.

Anaheim third baseman Troy Glaus, Angels outfielder Darin Erstad, White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez and New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posasa were first-time picks, as were Colorado first baseman Todd Helton, Giants second baseman Jeff Kent and St. Louis shortstop Edgar Renteria.

Managers and coaches vote on the awards, given to the top players at each position in each league, and they are asked to base their picks only on offensive production. They are not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.
