Reaction of sports to selected historic events
March 1919   A flu epidemic that killed 30 million people worldwide caused the cancellation of the Stanley Cup series, tied 2-2, between the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Mets. 
Aug. 2, 1923   President Warren G. Harding died, all baseball games canceled. 
June 6, 1944   D-day, all baseball games canceled. 
April 14, 1945   Two days after death of President Roosevelt, all exhibition baseball games canceled. 
Feb. 6, 1952   The death of England's King George VI, an NHL game between the New York Rangers and Maple Leafs is postponed. 
Nov. 22, 1963   President Kennedy's assassination on Friday. NFL played that Sunday, college football games not played on Saturday. 
April 5, 1968   Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, Washington Senators postpone American League opener five days. 
Sept. 5, 1972   Munich Olympics suspended for 34 hours after 11 Israeli athletes slain during a Palestinian terrorist raid. Games then continue. 
March 31, 1981   Assassination attempt on President Reagan, NCAA championship basketball game between North Carolina and Indiana was played. 
Oct. 17, 1989   San Francisco earthquake, Games 3 and 4 of the World Series postponed until Oct. 27. 
Jan. 27, 1991   Super Bowl played amid tightened security during Gulf War. 
April 30, 1992   Rioting in Los Angeles following the Rodney King verdict. The Los Angeles Dodgers postponed a three-game series against Montreal and one game against Philadelphia. The first-round NBA playoff game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz was postponed three days and moved to Anaheim, and the Portland-LA Lakers game was delayed two days and moved to Las Vegas. 
July 27, 1996   Centennial Park bombing at Atlanta Olympics, games go on as scheduled. 
April 20, 1999   After the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., the Denver Nuggets postponed their NBA game with Portland, the Colorado Avalanche postponed their opening two NHL playoff games and the Colorado Rockies called off two games with Montreal. 
Sept. 11, 2001   Terrorists attacks in New York and Washington, all baseball games postponed.
