NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Major League Baseball and the Players Association donated $10 million and announced the creation of the MLB-MLBPA Disaster Relief Fund on Wednesday to aid the victims of last week's terrorist attacks in the United States.

MLB and the MLBPA each will contribute $5 million. Distributions from the fund will be made by a joint committee of the Commissioner's Office and Players Association representatives after consultation with other governmental and charitable relief organizations.

"All of Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the loss of life and terrible damage wrought by the terrorist attacks that struck our nation," commissioner Bud Selig said. "Our game, besides being the national pastime, is a social institution with social responsibilities that include responding to an unimaginable crisis such as this in a timely and significant manner."

"The events of September 11 left all of us horrified, and none of us untouched," said Players Association executive director Donald Fehr. "Baseball and America have always gone together, and now, as the country moves forward to relieve the suffering and heal the wounds, everyone in the baseball community wants to go along."

The $10 million joint fund is in addition to the generous contributions already made by many individual clubs and players.

Baseball postponed games from Tuesday through Sunday in the wake of the terrorist attacks that occured in New York, Washington and eastern Pennsylvania on September 11.

The six days of games missed have been rescheduled for the first week of October, likely pushing the World Series into November for the first time in history.

In addition players are wearing American flags on the backs of their uniforms and side of their caps through the remainder of the season.
