No. 62 doesn't lift Cubs Pirates prevail despite another shot from SosaUpdated: Friday October 05, 2001 6:21 PM
CHICAGO (AP) -- Kevin Young hit a go-ahead, sixth-inning homer and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 Friday, despite Sammy Sosa's 62nd homer. Young's 14th homer was a solo shot off Jason Bere (11-11) and broke a 2-2 tie as the Pirates avoided their 100th loss. Sosa's solo homer leading off the bottom of the fourth gave him 100 extra base hits, a number reached earlier this season by Barry Bonds and Todd Helton. Sosa, the only player in major league history with three seasons of 60 homers, saluted Bonds on his 70th home run. "It's unbelievable, it's amazing," Sosa said before Friday's game. "To see that record be tied so quickly, somebody probably would be thinking that it would be another 37 years before it was broken," said Sosa, who hit 66 homers in 1998 when Mark McGwire first reached 70. Rob Mackowiak robbed Sosa of an extra base hit in the bottom half jumping into the ivy to snare his long fly. The Pirates scored two in the fifth, thanks to two errors on overthrows by Chicago third baseman Augie Ojeda. Ojeda made bad throws on Pirates starter Dave Williams' bunt, allowing Gary Matthews Jr to score, and on Jack Wilson's infield single that preceeded a sacrifice fly by Aramis Ramirez. Williams had to leave the game with two outs in the fifth after brusing his left hand while fielding Bere's comebacker. Joe Beimel (6-11) was called from the bullpen and was greeted by Delino DeShields game-tying RBI double, but got the win with 2 1-3 innings of two-hit relief. Bere allowed just three hits in eight innings, walking five and striking out five. Notes: The Pirates are one loss away from their first 100-loss season since 1985 and seventh all-time. ... Sosa also has 33 doubles and five triples this season. ... Cubs catcher Joe Giardi had surgery on his left knee Friday to remove bone fragments. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
