Milestone Watch

Hits, homers and heroes to keep an eye on in 1999

HITS

Now that Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs have accomplished their goals, only 23 players in major league history have ever reached the magical number of 3,000 hits. Babe Ruth never did it, nor did Ted Williams or Mickey Mantle -- three of the greatest players in the history of the game. But a back injury to Cal Ripken Jr. will prevent 1999 from being the first year in history with three new members in the 3,000-hit club.

HOMERS

On Aug. 5, Mark McGwire became a member of an even more exclusive club -- 500 homers. Big Mac is the 16th man to have accomplished the feat. Besides McGwire, only one is currently not in the Hall of Fame -- Eddie Murray, who will not be Hall eligible until 2003. Meanwhile, hitting 400 homers is almost as rare, with Ripken becoming only the 29th player to reach the milestone. Ken Griffey Jr. and Fred McGriff also are within reach of the magic number.
