MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- An already dismal season for the Houston Astros hit rock bottom today.

Jose Hernandez had a two-run double in a seven-run ninth inning and followed with a homer in the 10th, giving the Milwaukee Brewers an improbable 10-9 victory in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Astros (15-27), National League Central champions each of the last three years, suffered their sixth straight loss, matching their longest skid since August 28-September 2, 1997.

"It was terrible, the worst I've ever seen. As soon as they tied the game, you could feel the letdown," Houston manager Larry Dierker said. "I wasn't optimistic at that point. Just tying it was enough to pratically win the game."

Houston was forced to make the one-day trip from Montreal to Milwaukee after games here on Wednesday and Thursday were postponed due to rain. It will be a trip the Astros will try to forget after Billy Wagner allowed a tying two-run single to Jeromy Burnitz in the ninth for his fourth blown save in eight chances this season.

Hernandez followed with a one-out homer to left field off Joe Slusarski (0-2) in the 10th.

David Weathers (3-1) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win.

The Astros scored five times in their final two at-bats to seemingly put the game out of reach, but the Brewers capitalized on a lack of control by Houston relievers.

"If we don't walk the batters and give up the wild pitches, we win the ballgame in nine innings," Dierker said.

Doug Henry failed to retire any of the four batters he faced to start the ninth. Burnitz walked and Charlie Hayes singled before Lyle Mouton doubled to left field to bring home a run.

Hernandez followed with a two-run double that cut the margin to 9-5. Jose Cabrera relieved and immediately threw a wild pitch that moved Hernandez to third. Marquis Grissom followed with an RBI single, prompting Dierker to bring in Wagner.

Raul Casanova walked before Wagner struck out pinch-hitter James Mouton and Ron Belliard. Mark Loretta singled in a run before both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right field by Burnitz.

"It's highly unlikely," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said of the comeback. "You don't see that at any level, much less the major leagues."

Richard Hidalgo hit a three-run homer in the third for Houston, which fell to 0-12 in one-run games this season. Hidalgo broke an 0-for-18 slump on Sunday with a home run at Montreal.

The Astros scored three times in the eighth and twice in the ninth.

Tony Eusebio had an RBI single in the eighth and scored on an error by shortstop Hernandez. Craig Biggio drove in the third run of the inning with a single. Bill Spiers added a two-run double in the ninth.

Houston wasted a solid effort from starter Shane Reynolds, who allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

Milwaukee starter Steve Woodard also went seven innings, giving up four runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Houston jumped on Woodard for a run in the first when Roger Cedeno tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Biggio.

Lyle Mouton had a two-run double in the first.
