PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Randy Wolf made a mistake to the second batter he faced. He did not make another. Wolf allowed only a first-inning single in his second career shutout and Scott Rolen and Travis Lee homered as the Philadelphia Phillies posted an 8-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Wolf (8-11) gave up a single to Raul Gonzalez with one out in the first inning then cruised to his second shutout in three starts. He also issued a leadoff walk in the sixth but induced a double play and faced just one batter over the minimum. "It's almost better to get it out of the way early and not worry about the no-hitter," Wolf said. The 25-year-old lefthander threw 72 of 107 pitches for strikes and struck out eight for the first time since May 23. He became the first Phillies' pitcher to throw a one-hitter since Curt Schilling on September 9, 1992. "This is what it's all about," Wolf said. "Playing in September when you're in it is fun. Every good game gives you confidence. I know they say the baseball season is a marathon, but September is a sprint, not a marathon." Rolen opened the second inning with a homer against rookie Jared Fernandez to give Wolf all the support he needed. Rolen singled and scored on a two-run double by Marlon Anderson in the fourth. Lee belted a three-shot in the fifth as the Phillies remained one-game behind first-place Atlanta in the National League East. "Scottie started us off, Marlon got a huge two-out hit. If you drew up a perfect plan, this was it," Philadelphia manager Larry Bowa said. "I'd like to bottle that 10 more times." Philadelphia improved to 81-71, ensuring that it would finish at least .500 for the first time since 1993. Fernandez (0-1) was roughed up in his first major league start. The 28-year old knuckleballer surrendered six runs -- three earned -- and four hits in 4 2/3 innings. After Gonzalez lined a 3-1 pitch into right-center field for his first major league hit, Wolf retired 14 straight batters. Only two of those batters hit the ball out of the infield and five were strikeouts victims. Corky Miller worked a six-pitch walk to open the sixth, but pinch hitter Jason Larue fouled out and Wilton Guererro bounced into a double play to end the inning. Wolf threw just 30 pitches over the final three innings to seal the victory. Rolen opened the second by lining an 0-1 pitch from Fernandez into the left-field seats for his 23rd homer. "Before the game, I said (Rolen) was the one guy who might hit the knuckleball because he waits so well," Reds manager Bob Boone said. "The ball just straightened out on him." Rolen walked with one out in the fourth, stole second and advanced to third on Brian Hunter's infield hit. Anderson doubled into the left-center field to plate Rolen and Hunter for a 3-0 lead. Wolf singled to open the fifth and went to third when rookie Jimmy Rollins reached on a throwing error by second baseman Todd Walker. Wolf scored on a groundout by Bobby Abreu and Rolen walked to chase Fernandez. Hector Mercado entered and surrendered Lee's 19th homer on his second pitch. Todd Pratt walked with one out in the ninth and scored on a triple by Rollins with two outs to cap the scoring.
