PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies try to
complete a three-game sweep at home against the New York Mets
for the second time in four years on Thursday afternoon.
The Phillies have not swept three games from the Mets in
Philadelphia since September 20-22, 1999. Philadelphia did
sweep a three-game set in New York last May 28-30. On Wednesday,
the Phillies posted a 5-2 victory as Terry Adams tossed six
effective innings and Pat Burrell drove in two runs.
Burrell hit a three-run homer on Tuesday and is hitting .274
(31-for-113) with 11 homers and 35 RBI against the New York.
Brandon Duckworth (2-3, 5.14 ERA) takes the mound for his 10th
start and tries to remain undefeated at home. He is 2-0 in four
starts here this season and 4-0 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 career
outings in Philadelphia.
Duckworth did not receive a decision in his last start when he
allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings of a 5-4 loss at
Arizona on Saturday. The 26-year-old righthanders lone start
against the Mets was last August 28 in New York. He allowed four
runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 9-6 11-inning victory.
New York, which is 5-4 on its 10-game road trip, counters with
Steve Trachsel (3-4, 3.71), who looks to continue his recent
mastery over the Phillies.
Last season, Trachsel was 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA against the
Phillies and became the first pitcher to post four victories in
a season against them since Montreal's Ken Hill in 1992.
The veteran righthander has not lost to the Phillies since June
26, 1999 when he was with the Chicago Cubs. He is 6-3 with a
3.69 ERA in 14 career outings against the Phillies, including a
3-1 record in six starts in Philadelphia.
Trachsel allowed four runs and seven hits over seven innings in
a 13-4 victory at San Diego on Friday.
New York outfielder Roger Cedeno had three hits Wednesday,
extending his hitting streak to 10 games.
