MONTREAL (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies try to
avoid their ninth loss in 12 games when they play the Montreal
Expos in the second game of a weekend series.
In the series opener on Friday, Vladimir Guerrero's three-run
double in the seventh inning snapped a tie as the Expos won for
just the third time in 10 games, 4-1.
Montreal's Carl Pavano (3-5, 5.44 ERA) snapped a personal
three-game losing streak in his last start, a 3-1 triumph at Los
Angeles last Saturday in which he allowed one run and six hits
in 7 1/3 innings.
Pavano is 2-5 with a 3.63 ERA in nine career starts against the
Phillies.
Pavano will oppose David Coggin (0-1, 6.48), who will make his
10th major league appearance and fifth start. He fared well
against Randy Johnson and Arizona on May 16, yielding one run
and three hits in five innings, but did not earn a decision in
the 4-2 loss.
Coggin is 1-0 with a 7.50 ERA in his one prior start against
Montreal.
Phillies manager Larry Bowa will miss his second straight game.
He is serving a three-game suspension for an altercation with an
umpire last week. Bench coach Gary Varsho will fill in for
Bowa.
