Padres seek first ever four-game sweep against Cardinals
San Diego (16-14) at St Louis (18-11), 2:15 pm EDT
ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The
San Diego Padres
have a chance to sweep a four-game series from the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time in franchise history.
The Padres, who have not swept the Cardinals in a three-game set since 1980, have taken the first three games of this series, including Saturday's 5-4 triumph.
Mark Sweeney
capped a four-run fifth inning with a tiebreaking two-run double for the Padres, who extended their winning streak to six games.
St. Louis, which had won 14 of 19 before San Diego came to town, is one loss away from being swept in a four-game series for the first time in exactly two years (at Cincinnati). The Cardinals have not been swept in four games at home since Pittsburgh victimized them in 1997.
Cardinals starter
Jason Marquis
(4-1, 2.85 ERA) has allowed one run or less in four of his six starts, including Thursday's outing against Cincinnati. Marquis yielded just one run and three hits in a season-high eight innings in a 4-2 triumph.
Tim Redding
(0-4, 6.00) counters for San Diego as he looks to pick up his first win as a Padre. Redding is coming off his best start of the season, allowing just one run in seven innings on Tuesday against Colorado.
