Padres put eight-game run on the line against Mariners

San Diego (26-16) at Seattle (16-25), 10:05 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres are showing no signs of slowing down and will try to keep their impressive run going Saturday against the Seattle Mariners in the second contest of a three-game interleague series at Safeco Field.

Behind another vintage performance by ace Jake Peavy , the Padres rolled to a 6-1 victory in the series opener Friday, their eighth straight win and 17th in 20 games overall.

Peavy tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 in his second straight stellar outing, improving to 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA lifetime vs. the Mariners.

Despite his team's strong run, Brian Lawrence (2-4, 5.24 ERA) has not won in three starts in May. He gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings in a 12-4 win over the Florida Marlins , leaving with a 4-1 deficit and later seeing his club break out for 11 runs.

Lawrence has struggled mightily on the road, going 0-3 with a 9.68 ERA. He likely will get two starts on the Padres' nine-game road trip.

Seattle has lost four of seven on its nine-game homestand and is 7-14 overall at Safeco Field.

Gil Meche gets the start for the Mariners (3-2, 5.25), coming off his first home win of 2005. He allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings in a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
