Padres face Zambrano, Cubs in series finale

Chicago Cubs (29-25) at San Diego (34-22), 4:35 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres hope to salvage a split of their series with the Chicago Cubs , but they will have to do it without the services of their ace.

The Padres have dropped two of the first three games of the set, but expected to have undefeated righthander Jake Peavy on the mound Sunday in the series finale.

Peavy, who is suffering from an upper respiratory infection, will have his start pushed back to Wednesday.

Woody Williams (2-2, 4.84 ERA) was slated to be activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game and get the nod in Peavy's place. Williams, who has been out since May 1 with a strained oblique muscle, has yielded three runs or fewer in four of his six starts.

The 38-year-old righthander is 2-7 with a 4.90 ERA in 12 lifetime starts against the Cubs.

Chicago starter Carlos Zambrano (3-3, 3.62) allowed just one run in eight innings Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers but did not factor in the 2-1 win. The outing marked the eighth time in 11 starts that he has yielded three runs or fewer, the seventh time he has logged at least seven innings and the ninth time the Cubs' workhorse has thrown at least 105 pitches.

Zambrano owns a 3-0 mark with a 3.47 ERA in four lifetime starts against the Padres.

The Cubs rallied for seven runs in the fifth and pounded out 17 hits overall en route to an 11-5 victory on Saturday.
