Rockies-Padres Preview

It took one road game for the Colorado Rockies to display the kind of offense that was absent during a season-opening three-game set at hitter-friendly Coors Field. They're hoping it rubs off on shortstop Clint Barmes .

Barmes looks to get untracked when the Rockies try for a second straight victory as they continue a three-game series Saturday with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Rockies began a six-game road trip Friday by using a 13-hit attack for a 10-4 victory.

The offensive outburst came despite Barmes' 0-for-5 effort. Barmes is batting just .200 (4-for-20) through four games after he burst out by batting .410 in April a year ago.

''I look for that one strike and try to put it in play somewhere,'' said Barmes, who has yet to draw a walk this season. ''Maybe I've gone outside the zone at times. That's something I've got to work on.''

Barmes is a career .147 (5-for-34) hitter at Petco Park.

Colorado (2-2) was held in check in losing two of three against Arizona to begin the season, batting .229 and scoring 10 runs with only one homer.

The Rockies had nine extra-base hits and three homers Friday. Eli Marrero doubled twice and added his first homer of the season in his first start of the season.

''In order for me to hopefully get going, I have to have a quick start, a good, strong start,'' Marrero said. ''I like to get out right away. Today I was fortunate enough that a couple of balls landed in there for me.''

Marrero got the start because outfielder Matt Holliday was sent back to the hotel due to flu-like symptoms.

Colorado's Zach Day makes his first start of the season. Day was acquired from Washington last July and went 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA in five appearances with the Rockies, including two starts.

The 27-year-old right-hander is 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA against San Diego (1-2) in two career appearances, including one start. Day has never pitched at Petco Park.

He will be opposed by Dewon Brazelton , who is making his first start with San Diego. Brazelton was acquired in the offseason from Tampa Bay, where he spent the first four seasons of his career.

The 25-year-old right-hander had a rough time in Tampa Bay after being drafted third overall in 2001 by the Devil Rays . He went 1-8 with a 7.61 ERA last season in 20 appearances, including eight starts.

Brazelton won a spot in the rotation in spring training by going 1-0 with a 1.77 ERA in six appearances, including five starts.

''You come in with all that hoopla as a high draft pick, so there's some name recognition,'' Brazelton said. ''I'm ready to get to the point where people know me as one of the better pitchers. It takes time, but that's what I think I'm going to do.''

San Diego closer Trevor Hoffman has yet to appear in a game. Hoffman had seven saves and a 4.15 ERA in nine appearances against Colorado last season.
