Jake Peavy doesn't have much to show for strong efforts in his last two starts.

Peavy tries for his first win since opening day for the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night when they continue a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park.

Peavy (1-2, 4.32) is 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in his last two outings. He allowed one run and four hits over seven innings his last time out and left with the lead before the bullpen blew it in a 7-2 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday.

''It's always tough getting beat - especially when you're in the lead,'' Peavy said. ''It's baseball, and it happens. I'll take my chances (again) with the same guys out there.''

The right-hander was hit on the right shin by a comebacker by Mets pitcher Steve Trachsel in the third inning, but stayed in the game after the training staff put a compress on the shin. Peavy had X-rays after the game, which didn't show a break.

Peavy is pitching against an opponent to which he hasn't lost in more than two years. He's 5-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his last seven starts against Arizona, which hasn't beaten him since April 16, 2004.

Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez is batting .406 (13-for-32) with 11 RBIs in his career against Peavy.

San Diego (8-11) continues to struggle on offense after a 4-1 loss in Monday's series opener. The Padres have scored only 78 runs, the second-lowest total in the NL.

With runs at a premium, San Diego has been forced to use its speed. The Padres are 16-for-16 in stolen bases - the only NL team not to get caught this season.

Rookie second baseman Josh Barfield leads the Padres with six steals.

''I can run unless they put up a stop sign,'' Barfield said. ''I'm trying to be smart about it. I like to run, but I don't want to run into outs.''

Brandon Webb pitched into the ninth inning for Arizona (9-11) on Monday, giving the bullpen some needed rest.

Diamondbacks relievers had worked 18 2-3 innings over the previous four games before Webb's 104-pitch effort provided them with relief.

Right fielder Shawn Green went 2-for-3, raising his average to .226. Green has not driven in a run over his last 13 games.

Claudio Vargas (1-1, 8.25) makes his fourth start for Arizona. Vargas won at Milwaukee in his first outing on April 9, but is 0-1 with a 16.50 ERA in his two starts since.

The right-hander has failed to last past the fourth inning his last two times on the mound. He was tagged for six runs and eight hits in 2 2-3 innings and did not receive a decision in a 9-7 loss to San Francisco on Thursday.

Vargas is 0-2 with a 3.72 ERA against San Diego in four career appearances, including three starts.
