Petco Park is starting to become the
Colorado Rockies
' favorite place to visit.
The Rockies (27-24) look for their fifth straight win at the home of the
San Diego Padres
when the teams meet on Tuesday.
Colorado has gone 14-9 at Petco Park since it opened in 2004, and has won all four matchups there this season.
The Rockies swept San Diego (26-25) from April 7-9, becoming the first visiting team to score in double-digits in three straight
games, and beat the Padres 5-0 on Monday. The win moved Colorado ahead of San Diego and into third place in the NL West.
''It's amazing because it seems like the way they swing the bats here, it's like Coors Field,'' San Diego's
Dave Roberts
said. ''They do have confidence when they come here.''
Jason Jennings
allowed only two hits and faced four batters above the minimum, and
Matt Holliday
,
Brad Hawpe
and rookie
Ryan Spilborghs
homered for the Rockies in the series opener.
''Maybe it's just a comfort zone at this stadium,'' Jennings said. ''We just seem to kind of put it together a little bit
better that we have especially at L.A. and San Fran. We hardly ever play good there.''
The Rockies were swept by Los Angeles and lost two of three to San Francisco to begin this nine-game road trip.
The Padres have lost nine of their last 13 and are facing a pitcher on Tuesday who's had plenty of success against them.
Aaron Cook
(5-4, 3.39 ERA) looks for his fifth straight victory over San Diego when he starts for the Rockies. Three of those wins came
at Petco Park, and in his last five starts against the Padres, Cook has allowed a total of six runs.
He is 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 12 appearances against San Diego, his most wins against any opponent.
Cook is looking to rebound from his first loss of the month. He had been 3-0 in May before allowing three runs and nine hits
over six innings in a 7-1 defeat to the Dodgers last Wednesday.
The right-hander hasn't allowed more than four earned runs in any of his 10 starts this season, but has been hurt by a lack
of offense. Colorado is scoring only 4.48 runs when he starts.
Despite beating St. Louis 10-8 on Sunday, the Padres haven't produced much offense lately. San Diego has been held to two
hits three times in the last month after having that happen only once last season.
''Coming from the game we played yesterday, where there was so much offense, you expect something,'' Roberts said after going
0-for-4 on Monday.
Chris Young
(3-3, 4.32) looks for his first win since May 8 when he takes the mound for San Diego on Tuesday. He had his worst start of
the season in a 10-6 loss to Atlanta last Wednesday, giving up eight hits and six runs in three innings.
Young has faced the Rockies twice this season, giving up six runs in those two starts. He didn't earn a decision on April
7, but beat Colorado on April 17.
