Jake Peavy
has been less than stellar this season, but don't try telling that to the
San Francisco Giants
.
Peavy (4-9, 4.78 ERA) hasn't won since May 28 but will looks to defeat San Francisco for the fourth straight time when he
takes the mound Friday in the second game of the clubs' four-game series at AT&T Park.
Peavy is 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 15 career starts against San Francisco, including 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts this season.
He is 2-9 with a 5.23 ERA this season in his 16 outings versus all other opponents, including 0-4 in his last seven starts.
The 25-year-old right-hander hasn't lost to the Giants since Sept. 17, 2004, when he gave up
Barry Bonds
' 700th career home run. Bonds is 6-for-25 (.240) in his career against Peavy with three homers, 11 walks and five strikeouts.
He went 0-for-2 in a 10-4 loss to Peavy and the Padres on May 1.
In his last start on Sunday, Peavy allowed seven runs and nine hits - including two homers - in six innings of a 10-5 loss
to the
Atlanta Braves
, striking out seven and walking five batters. Despite the poor performance, Padres manager
Bruce Bochy
was diplomatic about his pitcher.
''I thought Jake threw some good pitches earlier,'' Bochy said. ''He wasn't getting the calls.''
Bonds hit his 722nd career homer in Thursday's series opener as the Giants won 9-3 for their third straight win. The left
fielder has 14 homers this season and is 33 shy of tying
Hank Aaron
's all-time record of 755. His 84 career homers against San Diego (50-45) are his most against any team in the majors.

said on the same day Bonds escaped possible federal grand jury indictment. ''He's with us and hitting home runs. There's a
lot of stuff happening in this world ... including Barry hitting one out. People had a lot of fun seeing him hit it.''
San Francisco (49-47) is in second place in the NL West, trailing the Padres by 1 1-2 games. The Padres have won five of nine
meetings with the Giants this season, including two of three at San Francisco.
Giants right-hander
Matt Cain
(6-6, 4.90) will oppose Peavy Friday.
Cain, who won five straight decisions earlier in the season, has failed to record a decision in his last three starts, including
Sunday's 6-2 loss to the
Philadelphia Phillies
. He allowed just one run and one hit in that outing, but walked four batters and threw 105 pitches - 47 of them balls - over
six innings.
Cain had a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed two runs and three hits in six innings against the Padres on July 1 at Petco
Park, but failed to get a decision in San Francisco's 7-4 defeat.

will miss Friday's game as he serves his one-game suspension for arguing balls and strikes in Sunday's loss to the
Atlanta Braves
.
San Diego has lost two straight games and five of seven since the All-Star break.
