LOS ANGELES 2, ARIZONA 0

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers got an unlikely lift from a struggling pitcher.

Odalis Perez took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Dodgers snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks .

Perez (5-7) stopped a personal five-start losing streak, earning his first win since May 23 at Milwaukee. In his previous five games, he was 0-5 with a 6.30 ERA.

" Odalis Perez obviously pitched a brilliant game today and that is why we won the ballgame," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "Odalis had command of both sides of the plate. This is how Odalis usually wins games."

Shea Hillenbrand ended the no-hit bid with a bloop single that dropped in front of right fielder Shawn Green to start the eighth.

"It was a great pitch, a changeup," Perez said. "He (Hillenbrand) was just able to get a piece of the ball. Green made the effort, he just couldn't get it. The fans wanted to see the no-hitter, but to dive may not have been the best play."

"I am running as fast as I can," Green added. "I am not going to put on a show (by diving). That is ridiculous. It is false hustle to dive, just for the sake of diving. If I thought I had a chance at all, I would have dove."

Tracy agreed that Green could not have could up to the ball.

"From my vantage point, he could have dove and landed 20 feet short of the ball," Tracy said. "If you dive and come up 20 feet short and the ball goes by you and the guy goes to third, that is not such a smart play. That is a judgement decision. I am not going to sit here and second guess (Green)."

Hillenbrand was erased when rookie Rob Hammock grounded into a double play. Quinton McCracken and Chad Moeller followed with singles for Arizona, but pinch hitter Carlos Baerga grounded out.

"The no-hitter was important for my career, but the most important thing is us getting the win," Perez said. "We were on a seven-game losing streak, so it was big for us to get a win."

"Odalis did a fine job of using his off-speed pitches," Moeller said. "Elmer (Dessens) threw a heck of a game. It's a shame we couldn't get him some runs. That may have been the best game pitched for us all year."

Eric Gagne tossed the ninth for his 30th save. It was Gagne's first save opportunity since June 21.

Perez shut down the red-hot Diamondbacks, who managed only two runners in the first seven innings and lost for just the third time in their last 17 games.

Alex Cintron reached on third baseman Adrian Beltre 's error in the first and Luis Gonzalez reached on a wild pitch in the fourth after striking out. Perez allowed three hits in eight innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

"That was the best I have seen Odalis pitch," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "This shows why he was an All-Star last year. Today, Perez would have beaten anybody. He had great command of everything."

It marked the fourth time in less than two seasons Perez has has had a no-hit bid fall short. He pitched a pair of one-hitters in 2002 and also took a perfect game into the seventh inning in another start.

"It (the no-hitter) will come one day," Perez said. "I know I am going to get it."

The Dodgers scored a pair of unearned in the fourth off Dessens (5-5), who gave up only five hits in seven innings.

Paul Lo Duca reached second on a pair of errors by third baseman Hammock and scored on Mike Kinkade 's RBI single. Kinkade took second on the throw to the plate and scored on David Ross' double.

Arizona's Steve Finley went 0-for-4, ending his 15-game hitting streak.

"It's one of those days where you have to tip your hat to the other guy," Finley said. "I could care less about the hitting streak. I would be happy anytime with an 0-for-4 game if we had won."
