CHICAGO CUBS 3, SAN FRANCISCO 0

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Matt Clement had his most dominant performance of the season, pitching a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants .

Moises Alou , the son of Giants manager Felipe Alou , provided the Cubs with all their offense with a three-run homer in the first inning off Giants starter Damian Moss (9-7).

"Just one pitch," Moss said. "I was trying to come in just to get him off my changeup because I made him look bad with a changeup the pitch before, so it was a situation where I just out-thought myself."

Clement (8-9) pitched his first complete game since a three-hitter at Arizona on August 24, 2002. The righthander also had a two-hitter last season on May 28 at Pittsburgh.

"(Catcher Damian Miller ) called a great game, Moises got the runs on offense, and the guys played great behind me," Clement said. "I held them off. It was a team win."

It was Clement's fourth career complete game and his third career shutout.

In the fifth, Clement struck out Jose Cruz Jr., Edgardo Alfonzo and Moss on nine pitches. He struck out Ray Durham on three pitches to start the sixth.

"He had a very good slider tonight," Cruz said. "We didn't do a very good job of picking it up or laying off it."

Marquis Grissom and Andres Galarraga had the only hits for the Giants. Galarraga and Barry Bonds drew Clement's two walks.

The Giants got only one runner as far as third base. After Benito Santiago reached on an error by third baseman Aramis Ramirez in the seventh, Galarraga singled to put runners at the corners. But Clement struck out Cruz to end the inning.

"When Matt needed it, the guys behind him backed him up, and then at times Matt just picked it up and struck guys out," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

Clement's performance overshadowed Moss, who gave up only five hits in seven innings. The lefthander struck out three and walked one but was done in by Alou's home run.

"If I throw well, I'll get my wins," Moss said. "I threw well tonight, but Clement threw lights-out."

With his 16th homer, Alou surpassed his season total of a year ago.

The Giants lost for just the second time in 12 games.
