SAN FRANCISCO 6, FLORIDA 4

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- It took five innings for the San Francisco Giants to figure out Dontrelle Willis .

Andres Galarraga had three hits and chipped in an RBI single in a five-run sixth inning as the Giants roughed up Willis en route to a 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins .

A rooke phenom and native of nearby Alameda, Willis surrendered three hits and carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth before the Giants drove the 21-year-old lefthander from the contest.

Marquis Grissom began the bottom of the sixth by lining a ball off Willis' right leg. Barry Bonds followed with a base hit and Edgardo Alfonzo came through with a run-scoring single to chase Willis, who was visibly upset with manager Jack McKeon's decision.

"It was more the situation how it came about (shaking his head as he left the field)," Willis said. "I never want to come out of the game but I was thinking of the possibilities of how it happened."

When he was removed from the game, Willis departed to a standing ovation.

"It's an awesome feeling," Willis said. "People out here just love good baseball. Don't get me wrong, this is the Giants' town but it's an honor to get an ovation by people enjoying baseball and hopefully they just appreciate how I go about my business when I lose."

McKeon defended his decision to pull Willis.

"You can't throw 89 pitches and have 48 strikes," McKeon said. "You're behind the hitters too much. You've got to stay ahead. When he was successful he was staying ahead of everybody."

The Giants went on to score four more times in the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Galarraga drove in a run with a base hit, Jose Cruz Jr. drew a walk with the bases loaded, recently acquired Eric Young lofted a sacrifice fly and Rich Aurilia added an RBI double to cap the uprising.

Willis (11-4) was charged with four runs and six hits in five-plus innings, walking four and striking out one. In six starts since the All-Star break, Willis is just 2-2 with a 6.09 ERA.

The Giants' big inning helped Sidney Ponson (1-3) to his first win in a San Francisco uniform. The righthander allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, walking three and striking out five.

"It's all over, the first one is all over," said Ponson, who seemed relieved about finally winning for his new team. "This is the hardest one to get. Hopefully I'm going to from here and get wins for the team. I never felt any pressure on me."

"That's big for him," Giants manager Felipe Alou . "He's pitched pretty good. We just haven't been scoring many runs for him. We scored two for him in Montreal and tonight we had one until that big inning."

After Matt Herges and Joe Nathan combined to allow two runs in 2 1/3 innings, Tim Worrell recorded the final two outs for his 26th save.

Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have lost four straight to drop 1 1/2 games behind Philadelphia in the National League wild card race.

After Alfonzo's single off Willis tied the game, Chad Fox came on and walked Santiago to load the bases and Galarraga delivered an RBI single to give the Giants a 3-2 lead. Fox continued to struggle as he walked Cruz to force in another run.

Neifi Perez struck out but Young lofted a sacrifice fly and Aurilia followed with an RBI double, extending the lead to 6-2.

Herges cruised through the seventh before the Marlins attempted to rally in the eighth. Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Encarnacion singled around a flyout. An error by Bonds in left field on Encarnacion's hit allowed the runners to move into scoring position.

Nathan relieved Herges and Derrek Lee lofted a sacrifice fly. But Nathan retired Miguel Cabrera on a comebacker to end the inning.

In the ninth, Lenny Harris singled with one out and Juan Pierre laced a base hit into right field.

Worrell, who who blew a save Thursday against Atlanta, entered and Luis Castillo greeted him with a run-scoring single that pulled the Marlins within 6-4. But Worrell induced Ivan Rodriguez to bounce into a game-ending double play.

"Worrell made a pretty good pitch," Alou said. "We wanted Worrell to save some bullets because he went two innings the other night. He made a pretty good pitch to Ivan Rodriguez ."

Grissom gave the Giants the lead with two outs in the bottom of the first, driving a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his 16th homer.

Ponson gave up one hit through the first four innings before the Marlins broke on top in the fifth.

Cabrera singled with one out and Gonzalez followed by hitting his second homer in as many nights and 15th of the season.
