PITTSBURGH (Ticker) --
Oliver Perez
endured a wild debut for the
Pittsburgh Pirates
.
Four days after being acquired from the
San Diego Padres
, Perez yielded three hits and three walks in a seven-run third inning as the
Atlanta Braves
rolled to a 13-6 victory over the Pirates.
Gary Sheffield
singled home a run and
Javy Lopez
and
Mark DeRosa
each had two-run doubles in the third off Perez (4-8) before rookie
Mike Hessman
greeted reliever
Nelson Figueroa
with a two-run homer.
Coincidentally, Hessman was optioned to Class AAA Richmond right after the game, but will return when rosters are expanded in September. He was recalled on August 18.
Marcus Giles
hit a solo homer off Figueroa to increase the lead to 8-1.
"It's nice to see the bats break out," said
Marcus Giles
. "We're capable of it and it's nice to see. We hadn't been swinging the bats well the last couple of days."
A three-run homer by
Craig Wilson
in the fourth inning and RBI singles by
Jack Wilson
and
Jeff Reboulet
in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, pulled the Pirates within 8-6.
The single for
Jack Wilson
extended his hitting streak to 17 games.
But the Braves broke open the game again with five runs in the ninth against relievers
Mike Lincoln
and
Mike Gonzalez
. Sheffield had a two-run double for his third hit of the game and scored on a single by
Chipper Jones
.
Andruw Jones
followed with a two-run homer.
Braves rookie
Horacio Ramirez
(9-4) picked up his first win since July 7 despite allowing five runs and 10 hits in seven innings.
"He (Ramirez) made one bad pitch to (Craig) Wilson and he deposited it," said Braves manager
Bobby Cox
. "It was good to get seven innings out of him to give our bullpen a rest.
Jaret Wright
, acquired on waivers from San Diego on Friday, pitched a scoreless ninth.
Perez retired just one of seven batters in the third inning and was charged with six runs and four hits.
"I'm not disappointed," Perez said through an interpreter. "I was not nervous, I just didn't make the right pitches. My slider was working pretty well, but I got behind too many hitters."
The lefthander walked
Rafael Furcal
and Giles to start the third before Sheffield's RBI single. After walking
Chipper Jones
, Perez retired
Andruw Jones
on a popout. But after back-to-back two-run doubles by Lopez and DeRosa, Pirates manager
Lloyd McClendon
lifted Perez.
"I'm sure he was a little excited, a little pumped up," McClendon said. "He certainly showed good stuff, but lost the plate."
