After posting a 17-11 record for Kansas City in 2002, Byrd (1-0) signed a two-year contract with the Braves in December of that year. The 33-year-old righthander pitched just one inning in spring training last season and was placed on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right elbow.

" surgery on his pitching elbow on July 1 and making four minor league rehabilitation starts, Byrd was sharp in his return to the major leagues. He struck out four, walked none and threw 64 of 91 pitches for strikes en route to his first victory since September 19, 2002.
