ATLANTA 5, BALTIMORE 0

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Russ Ortiz combined with John Smoltz on a 10-hitter as the Atlanta Braves blanked the Baltimore Orioles , 5-0.

Ortiz (7-6) made two unearned runs in the first inning hold up, scattering seven hits in seven-plus innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

The teams have traded 5-0 shutouts in the first two games of the interleague series. Baltimore rookie Daniel Cabrera tossed a five-hitter in Friday's series opener.

"I was aggressive out there," Ortiz said. "I threw pitches where I wanted. I knew what I needed to do and I did it."

The Braves took advantage of third baseman David Newhan 's throwing error to score their first two runs. After Rafael Furcal led off the first with a single, Newhan threw away rookie Nick Green 's sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third.

Following a walk to J.D. Drew, Chipper Jones delivered the first run with a groundout. Johnny Estrada 's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

"I got in trouble on the transfer," Newhan said of his throw that first baseman Rafael Palmeiro could not handle. "The runner and the ball got there at the same time, but he (Palmeiro) wasn't able to get to the ball."

Rodrigo Lopez (5-4) took the loss, giving up just five hits in seven frames.

"I tried to fool Jones with a back-door slider," Lopez said. "I felt strong with my fastball the whole game. Russ threw a good game.

Smoltz gave up three hits, but got the final six outs for his 12th save in 13 chances.

After Smoltz worked out of a first-and-second threat in the eighth by getting Palmeiro to pop up and former Brave Javy Lopez to ground into a double play, Atlanta broke it open with three runs in the ninth.

"That was huge," Braves manager Bobby Cox said of Lopez's double play. "Javy can change that game around in a heartbeat."

The Orioles stranded 10 and were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Julio Franco drove in his 26th run with a single in the ninth, breaking the record for most RBI in a season by a player 45 or older. Pete Rose drove in 25 runs as a 45-year-old in 1986.
