PHOENIX (Ticker) -- With his teammates' backing,
Jamey Wright
cruised to his first win of the season.
Wright threw five strong innings in his return to the
Colorado Rockies
and four teammates homered in an 8-2 victory over the
Arizona Diamondbacks
, who have dropped a franchise-record 13 straight games.
A first-round pick by the Rockies in 1993, Wright allowed one run and five hits and worked around four walks. He threw 97 pitches in his first appearance for Colorado since October 2, 1999.
"This is home," Wright said of being back with the Rockies. "The last year and a half I would like to forget about, but now I can just focus on getting better and improving."
Three double plays, one on a grounder in the second and two on fly balls in the first and fourth, helped Wright escape trouble.
The Rockies offense did the rest.
Vinny Castilla
gave Colorado the lead for good, 2-1, with a leadoff homer in the fourth, his fifth home run in four games and fourth vs. Arizona this season.
"This team has got some guys that can drive the ball," Castilla said. "This is a tough lineup when we get it going."
Aaron Miles
and
Todd Helton
homered in the fifth and
Larry Walker
, who was 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, added a solo shot in the sixth to make it 5-1.
The blast by Miles, his fourth of the year, extended his career-high hitting streak to 12 games.
In the first two games of the series, the Rockies have hit seven homers and have at least one in each of their last 10 road games.
"We're swinging the bat," Walker said. "I wish we could do this at home, but right now, for the first time in a decade that I've been with the team, we're swinging the bat better on the road."
Lance Cormier
(0-2) gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings in his second major league start, surrendering all four homers.
"I felt like I kept the ball down most of the time and made a couple of good pitches," Cormier said. "Big league hitters hit them out."
Since a 6-1 win over the
New York Yankees
on June 17, the Diamondbacks are 4-29 and have a 2-18 mark under interim manager
Al Pedrique
.
The club has dropped 10 straight games at home - also a franchise record.
"I think I am running out of patience," Pedrique said. "I understand what we are going through; the losing streak and having a real bad season and a young team. But we make mistakes that you should not see made up here at this level."
In addition to having two runners doubled off base on fly balls, Arizona committed two fielding errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Colorado secured its first series win at Bank One Ballpark since May 14-16, 1999.
