PHOENIX (AP) -
Robb Quinlan
had been taking some practice swings in case he was needed Saturday night. In the 13th inning, he made the most of his opportunity.
Quinlan hit a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 13th inning as the
Los Angeles Angels
rallied from a four-run deficit and beat the
Arizona Diamondbacks
6-4 Saturday night.
''You just have to try and be ready for any situation,'' said Quinlan, the 17th player used by Angels manager
Mike Scioscia
. ''I got behind in the count and was just trying to get something in play. He threw a curveball and obviously it wasn't where
he wanted to throw it.''
Adam Kennedy
hit a two-out single off
Brandon Medders
(1-2), the Diamondbacks' sixth pitcher. Quinlan then hit a 1-2 pitch just over the left-field fence for his first career pinch
homer.
''I made a bad pitch and took the team out of it,'' Medders said. ''I kinda feel like it's my fault I'm taking it all on my
shoulders. I think we were going to come back and win that inning. It's tough. I feel terrible''
Brendan Donnelly
(1-0) threw a perfect 12th for the victory.
Francisco Rodriguez
, the Angels' sixth pitcher, got the last three outs for his 18th save in 20 chances.
''I can't tell you what a big hit that was for us at that point,'' Scioscia said. ''It saved some pitching for us and got
Frankie in there for a save. It took a while but we put one on the board.''
Angels relievers retired the last 13 batters they faced.
''Our bullpen's coming into shape,'' Donnelly said.
Arizona has lost five straight and 17 of their last 19. The Diamondbacks are 0-8 against the American League, making them
the only team in the majors without an interleague win.
''We're going to keep swinging, keep grinding,'' said
Orlando Hudson
, who had one of Arizona's two homers. ''We have a long season ahead of us. We're not going to put our heads between our tails.''
With the Angels trailing 4-0 in the seventh,
Maicer Izturis
hit a one-out single to left, Kennedy reached on an error and starter
Claudio Vargas
hit pinch-hitter
Juan Rivera
with a pitch to load the bases.
Luis Vizcaino
relieved Vargas and gave up
Chone Figgins
' soft bounding single to right, scoring Izturis and Kennedy to cut Arizona's lead to 4-2.
Orlando Cabrera
followed with a two-run double into the left-field corner to tie the score.
''On the offensive side we hit a few balls hard but couldn't find any holes,'' Figgins said. ''You hit them hard and can't
find a hole and then get a seeing-eye single like that when you need it.''
Vizcaino retired
Vladimir Guerrero
on a hard liner to left before
Randy Choate
came on to strike out Anderson and retire the side.
The Angels threatened in the 10th when Guerrero led off with a ground-rule double against
Jorge Julio
and went to third on
Garret Anderson
's high fly to center. But Julio struck out
Mike Napoli
on a pitch a foot outside and Hudson snagged
Kendry Morales
' grounder in the hole and threw the first baseman out to end the inning.
In the 11th, pinch-hitter
Tim Salmon
tripled past a diving
Eric Byrnes
in center. Julio again quashed the rally, striking out Figgins on a high fastball.
Vargas, who had been allowed to hit with runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the sixth, allowed three
runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. He had a season-high seven strikeouts.
''He had a four-hit shutout going,'' Melvin said. ''We felt like we were in a pretty good spot. Our bullpen had been a little
bit taxed lately and he was throwing as well as we'd seen him all year.''
Hudson gave the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead in the second with a towering home run off
Bartolo Colon
into the overhanging porch in right-center field, his fourth of the season.
Johnny Estrada
extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI double in the fourth and Counsell led off the fifth with his second home run to make
it 4-0.
Colon, making his second start since missing two months with right shoulder inflammation, allowed the four runs and a season-high
nine hits in 5 2-3 innings.
Notes: Arizona RF
Shawn Green
was ejected for arguing by home-plate umpire Mike Everett after striking out in the bottom of the ninth, with manager
Bob Melvin
joining him to the clubhouse moments later. Melvin has been ejected twice in Arizona's last four games. ... Rivera was hit
in the shoulder by Vargas' pitch, the ball ricocheting off the left side of his face. He left the field under his own power,
glaring at Vargas as he headed back to the dugout. Rivera said after the game he'll be available on Sunday. ... Colon has
allowed at least seven hits in each of his five starts. ... Cabrera singled in the first inning to reach base in his 52nd
consecutive game. ... Los Angeles C
Mike Napoli
had reached base in 11 straight plate appearances, one shy of the Angels' club record, before striking out in the first inning.
... Before the game, Los Angeles placed 3B
Dallas McPherson
on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 22 with back spasms. McPherson was a late scratch from the lineup Friday after
his back tightened during batting practice. To replace McPherson, the Angels recalled INF
Erick Aybar
from Triple-A Salt Lake.
