2001 First-Year Player Draft

The Minnesota Twins selected hometown catcher Joe Mauer of Cretin-Derham High School in St. Paul with the top pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft. USC right-hander Mark Prior was considered the best player, but the financially strapped Twins were scared off by his expected demand of a $10 million signing bonus. The Chicago Cubs chose Prior with the No. 2 pick.
