Getting physical Giambi edges closer to signing with Yanks; Torre deal donePosted: Tuesday December 11, 2001 7:59 PMUpdated: Tuesday December 11, 2001 8:27 PM
BOSTON (AP) -- Jason Giambi's contract with the New York Yankees moved closer to completion Tuesday when the first baseman took a physical for the team in Tampa, Fla. In a deal that was finalized, the Yankees received a signed copy of manager Joe Torre's three-year contract extension, which he mailed to the team from Las Vegas, where he is vacationing. There was no indication if New York was on the verge of making any trades at this week's winter meetings. General manager Brian Cashman walked the corridors, talking with teams and agents. "We have to see if the waves break the way we want them," Cashman said. "Right now I'm just on the surf board riding the waves." Giambi's trip to Florida was another step in the slow process of finalizing a seven-year contract approaching $120 million. A lawyer familiar with the negotiations said the deal could be finalized by the end of this week. The lawyer spoke on condition of anonymity Torre's contract is complete, a deal worth about $16.5 million over three years, assuming the Yankees are consistent winners and he earns the performance bonuses that are part of the agreement. There was no official announcement by the team of Torre's contract, which the Yankees received Monday. But the Yankees have not announced Cashman's three-year contract, either. During the meetings, the Yankees are looking for another outfielder, with Rondell White and Moises Alou among the possibilities.
