Second thoughts Report: Angels management nixes Erstad deal to ChicagoPosted: Wednesday December 12, 2001 5:48 PMUpdated: Wednesday December 12, 2001 8:58 PM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Hours after both general managers agreed on a deal that would send Anaheim outfielder Darin Erstad to the Chicago White Sox for four players, Angels management apparently has killed the deal in a dispute over marketability. ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago, which broke the story Wednesday afternoon, is reporting that the deal fell through when Angels executives felt that the four players headed to Anaheim -- outfielder Chris Singleton, promising righthander Jon Garland and two minor leaguers -- were not "marketable" enough for a player of Erstad's stature. The initial report had Angels general manager Bill Stoneman and White Sox general manager Ken Williams agreeing on the deal around 4 p.m. EST. Williams reportedly knew that the deal was going to have to pass through some upper levels of Angels management and looked to hasten the trade by dropping his demands for a window of opportunity to negotiate a long-term deal with the 27-year-old Erstad.
Erstad is eligible for arbitration this February and could opt
for free agency after the 2002 season. The Angels are
attempting to keep costs in check and could have bolstered one
of the better young rotations in the game with the addition of
the 22-year-old Garland.
