'Not an issue'

Tests on Kent's wrist show minor ligament damage

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Giants second baseman Jeff Kent returned to the San Francisco Bay area for additional tests on the broken bone in his left wrist, which revealed minor ligament damage.

"What it showed was that the ligament would not be an issue," Giants trainer Stan Conte said Tuesday. "When the fracture heals, it's healed and he should be pain free."

An MRI exam and three-dimensional CT scan were performed on Kent, and he was re-examined by Giants team physicians Dr. Gary Fanton and Dr. Gordon Brody.

Conte maintained the recovery time would remain 4-to-6 weeks. There's a small chance Kent would be ready for the regular season opener on April 2 in Los Angeles.

"The best case scenario is the cast could come off after two weeks, and he could begin extensive rehab work," Conte said.

Kent is expected to return to the Giants spring training facility as early as Wednesday to begin conditioning drills. He will be able to run the bases, throw and swing with one arm.

Kent, the NL MVP in 2000, injured his wrist in a fall while washing his truck on Friday evening.
