BOSTON (AP) -- Rickey Henderson homered on the second pitch in the bottom of the first inning Saturday, extending his major league record to 80 leadoff homers. Henderson, who made the Boston Red Sox roster after signing a minor league contract during the offseason, hit Delvin James' pitch off a brace supporting the screen above the left-field wall.

Brady Anderson is second in major league history with 44 leadoff homers.

Henderson, who has played mostly against left-handers this season, was in the starting lineup because regular center fielder Johnny Damon was sidelined with tightness in his right hamstring. Damon left Friday's 4-2 win over Tampa Bay early with the injury.

Henderson's last start in center field was July 30, 1998, when he was with Oakland.
