NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Yankees right-hander Orlando Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after an MRI exam revealed a strained upper back.

Hernandez (4-2) missed his scheduled start Monday night against the Toronto Blue Jays and underwent the MRI examination Tuesday.

Hernandez had started eight games for the Yankees this season but missed an earlier start, also against Toronto on April 11, due to a stiff neck. He had allowed 37 hits in 52 2/3 innings and has an ERA of 3.44.

Left-hander David Wells, who was scratched from Tuesday night's start against Toronto, also had an MRI test. His diagnosis was a mildly strained lower back and he was listed as day-to-day.
