The recent developments in the Pete Rose case brought plenty of responses from our users, who were equally for and against the all-time Hit King.

No. He should not be reinstated. I was a season ticket holder (16 game plan) of the Phillies when Pete Rose was acquired and played in Philadelphia. His energy on and off the field was wonderful and the fans greatly appreciated his hustle and his giving everything to the game. But a part of giving everything to the game is playing by the rules. And Pete Rose did not play by the rules when it came to gambling. He was caught and he was punished and the punishment was "lifetime" exclusion. It was not 13 years or 15 years or 20 years. It was lifetime. He should not be reinstated.

Start with Darryl Strawberry - how many chances did he get?? What he did is a lot worse than what Rose was supposed to have done. Lots of other cases is sports where athletes get second, third and fourth chances. Rose should be entitled to be reinstated.

Yes I strongly feel Pete Rose deserves to be reinstated and allowed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. His so called offense is small compare to the crimes that athletics are doing today. Drugs, alcohol, dui's, murders and spousal abuse are some of the things these so called professionals are doing and they continue to be allowed the freedom to play their sport as if nothing is wrong with today's game.

I feel like the minority of baseball fans agrees with my opinion that Rose SHOULD NOT be reinstated unless he admits to and apologizes for what has been proven. Betting on baseball, while involved in it (he says he didn't, but from what I have read the evidence is pretty strong) is probably more damaging to the integrity of the game than steroid use. Steroids is supposed to make players "better, stronger" and that sort of thing, while gambling can encourage managers or players to perform more poorly. Not that I am advocating allowing steroids, but at least they are used in the spirit of improving ones individual game.

Pete Rose should not be reinstated to baseball. He had, and still continues to use baseball only for his personal gain and advantage. He has never owned up to his mistakes of judgment in the past, and will not be doing so in the future. He is selfish and cares nothing about the game except where it benefits him personally.

What about Joe Jackson. Arguably the greatest hitter of his era. Never bet on baseball. Joe first, then we'll deal with Rose. By the way, I have the most valuable memorabilia ball in Baseball History. It's the only one in existence NOT signed by Pete Rose.

He signed a document many years ago. He should live to the terms of that document. Imagine buying a house and having the original owner ask for more money thirteen years later.

I don't see why not. What he did was extremely wrong but if baseball will let people who use drugs, beat their partners/spouses, etc. continue to play, why shouldn't Pete Rose be reinstated. You can't have it both ways MLB. Be consistent with your punishments!

The rule Pete broke is simple. If you bet on a game you are involved in it will result in a life time ban. There is no gray area here. He broke this rule. Now Bud Selig wants to let him back in. Seems to me it is the same old story. Star athletes can break what ever rules they want and not pay the penalties that are established for the rest of the world.

Absolutely. He should be reinstated. How is it possible to have a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame without one of the best players to ever play the game. Did he bet on baseball, I don't know, but did he ever do anything to cause his team to lose in order to win some money? Maybe Bud Selig is talking to Pete because either it will boost his already shaky approval rating, or maybe Selig is just preparing a replacement. I would rather see Pete Rose as a commissioner than see Selig involved with baseball.
Richie Frazier, Adrian, Mo.

To reinstate Cheatin Pete without giving the others banned for live the opportunity to clear their names is a miscarriage of justice and discriminatory. Baseball already has two strikes against it(designated hitter and interleague play),to reinstate Rose would be the third and final strike against what was once our nation's glorious pastime. NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO.....

Pete Rose bet on baseball as manager of the Reds. Pete Rose signed a piece of paper banning himself from baseball because of said actions. He is ineligible to be elected to the Hall of Fame because he signed that paper. Pete Rose claims he never bet on baseball. Pete Rose thinks getting a standing ovation a year will turn public opinion in his favor that baseball's been too tough on him when in actuality, Pete Rose bet on baseball, and Pete Rose signed the paper banning himself. Pete Rose has never taken responsibility for his actions. I hope he never gets in the Hall with the rest of the gamblers from the '19 Black Sox. Baseball players can do anything, take drugs, be racists, beat their wives (and still make the Hall of Fame) but the one thing that's absolutely forbidden is betting on baseball. If we as fans can't trust the integrity of the game, and as a manager betting on his team to win or lose we cannot, the game ceases to exist.

Pete Rose broke the law and was "banned" from baseball in 1989. However, if we can make Ollie North an "expert" news analyst why not Pete Rose. Maybe CNNSI could hire him to write a baseball/sports column. He could even do commentary on one of the ESPN sports shows as an "expert analyst". His public acceptance would be much easier if you folks would hire him first!

Pete Rose was a scumbag when he played and is still a scumbag now. He's cheated everything from baseball to his taxes and is widely believed to have been involved in other criminal activities. It's interesting that you don't hear many of his teammates come to his defense. That should tell you something.
