SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres' new ballpark will be called PETCO Park after the pet supply company agreed Wednesday to a naming rights deal reportedly worth more than $60 million over 22 years.

PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc., is a nationwide retailer of pet supplies that was founded in San Diego in 1965.

The ballpark is scheduled to be completed by opening day 2004.

"PETCO is a very important and desirable new corporate partner for the Padres for a number of reasons," team owner John Moores said. "We share a commitment to the San Diego community and a focus on family values. If there is any pastime that is as American as baseball, it is caring for the family pets, so this is the perfect partnership for two San Diego institutions."

White Sox add White to relief corps

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox bolstered their bullpen Wednesday, signing right-handed reliever Rick White to a one-year, $750,000 deal.

White will make $600,000 this season, and the club has a $1.3 million option with a $150,000 buyout for 2004. He can make an additional $150,000 in performance bonuses, getting $50,000 each if he pitches in 60, 65, and 70 games.

White split the season between Colorado and St. Louis, going 5-7 with a 4.31 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 61 games. But he was 3-1 with a 0.82 ERA and seven holds in 20 games for the Cardinals, and allowed just 16 baserunners.

Commissioner's office lays off 10 percent of staff

NEW YORK -- The commissioner's office laid off about 20 employees on Wednesday, approximately 10 percent of major league baseball's central staff.

"We have been saying all along that like most industries, ours is affected by the economy," said Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer. "Clubs have been addressing it with their own personnel. We addressed it here today."

The commissioner's office and Major League Baseball Productions had about 225 employees before the layoffs. Baseball's Internet company, MLB Advanced Media, employs about 125 more people. It made layoffs earlier during the offseason, DuPuy said.

Rays sign Fabregas to minor league deal

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed catcher Jorge Fabregas to a minor league contract Wednesday with an invitation to the team's spring training camp.

Fabregas is a career .241 hitter with 23 homers and 211 RBIs.
