CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Oakland Athletics shortstop Miguel Tejada, who can become a free agent after next season, wants a long-term contract.

Tejada, playing for his native Dominican Republic at the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico this week, won the AL MVP award last season when he batted .308 with 34 home runs and 131 RBIs.

He said he plans to begin negotiating a new contract with the A's during spring training, but declined to mention how much money he will ask for.

Tejada made $3.62 million last season.

"I want a contract for a lot of years; for eight or 10 years because I want to secure my future with the team for which I am going to play," he said Sunday before the Dominican Republic's game against Puerto Rico.

Tejada is the main attraction at the Caribe Series being held at Roberto Clemente Stadium in Carolina, a suburb of San Juan, the capital.

Hundreds of Dominicans living in this U.S. Caribbean territory cheered and waved their country's flag as Tejada arrived at the ballpark.
