CHICAGO (AP) -- A man who ran onto the field and attacked an umpire during a game between the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago White Sox was charged with felony aggravated battery Wednesday.

Eric Dybas also was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing for attacking first base umpire Laz Diaz at the end of the eighth inning in Tuesday night's game at Comiskey Park.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the 24-year-old Dybas, who was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, Cook County State's Attorney spokesman John Gorman said.

The attack came about seven months after Kansas City first base coach Tom Gamboa was pummeled by a father and son during a game at Comiskey.

Diaz, a burly 40-year-old umpire who served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, was running from his position toward right field to watch a fly ball get caught to end the eighth inning. Dybas ran toward Diaz and tried to tackle him, wrapping his arms around his legs. Security personnel and players rushed to help Diaz, who was not hurt.

The fan needed treatment for minor injuries at a hospital after being thrown to the ground and roughed up by players. He was later seen with a bloody bandage on his head. It was unclear whether he had been drinking alcohol.

Three other fans also ran onto the field Tuesday night and were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespassing. That prompted major league baseball to scrutinize security at all of its ballparks. The White Sox added extra precautions for Wednesday night's game, also against the Royals.
