Brewers select Weeks with No. 2 pick Posted: Tuesday June 03, 2003 8:06 PMMILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers used the second selection in the baseball draft Tuesday to pick Southern University second baseman Rickie Weeks. One of the most exciting players in college baseball, Weeks hit .483 with 17 homers and 73 RBIs and will be the second player in Division I history to lead the nation in batting for two straight seasons. Weeks, 20, has stolen 28 bases in as many attempts this season and is 65 for 66 in his college career. Undrafted out of high school, Weeks has speed and power and has been praised for his lightning-quick wrists and natural baseball instincts. "We are very pleased to get a player of Rickie Weeks' ability," said Jack Zduriencik, the Brewers' director of scouting. "He is a pure hitter with tremendous speed and power, tools that will help him through our minor league system and to the major leagues." Even as a top draft pick, Weeks said he doesn't feel pressure to perform. "You're always going to have critics. You have to let the game speak for itself on the field," he said. Weeks described himself as an unselfish player and said he was looking forward to playing in the Brewers organization and working his way up to the majors, although he wouldn't put a timeframe on his progression. Delmon Young, a power-hitting high school outfielder from California, was taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the No. 1 pick. Young is the brother of Detroit Tigers outfielder Dmitri Young.
Milwaukee took San Diego State outfielder Anthony Gwynn, the son of Tony Gwynn, with the second pick of the second round -- the 39th overall selection.
