ATLANTA (AP) -- The New York Yankees traded right-hander Dan Miceli to the Houston Astros on Tuesday for a player to be named or cash.

Miceli, 32, was taken off the Yankees' roster Friday when he was designated for assignment, clearing a spot for Nick Johnson to come off the disabled list.

Miceli was expected to join the Astros for Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. Houston didn't plan to make a roster decision until after the opener of a three-game series at Turner Field.

"We're looking for quality," Astros manager Jimy Williams aid. "Hopefully, we'll get quality. He's pitched a lot and pitched successfully."

Miceli will be joining his ninth major league team, his fourth this season. He is 1-3 with one save and has a 4.02 ERA in 34 games and 40 1/3 innings with Colorado, Cleveland and the Yankees.

He began the year with the Rockies, going 0-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 14 games, then was released May 11. He signed with Cleveland four days later and was dealt to New York on June 25 with outfielder Karim Garcia for a player to be named.

Miceli also has pitched for Pittsburgh, Detroit, San Diego, Florida and Texas, going 34-41 with 33 saves and a 4.73 ERA in 482 games over 11 seasons.
