Brewers sign Weeks, second overall pick Posted: Tuesday August 05, 2003 7:28 PMMILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to terms on a contract with infielder Rickie Weeks, the second overall pick in the June amateur draft. No terms were disclosed, but general manager Doug Melvin confirmed the sides had been discussing a major league contract. Weeks will report to Maryvale of the Arizona Rookie League on Wednesday, scouting director Jack Zduriencik said. Weeks has earned numerous accolades since the draft, including the Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur player in the country. He led all college hitters with a .479 batting average in 2003 for Southern University, the second consecutive season he led the nation in hitting. Weeks had 16 home runs and 66 RBIs.
He set an NCAA Division I mark with a .473 career average. The two-time All-American second baseman was successful on all 31 stolen-base attempts this season and was 68-for-69 in his career.
