Kearns to have shoulder surgery Thursday Posted: Monday August 11, 2003 1:49 PMCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Cincinnati Reds outfielder Austin Kearns, who got off to a strong start before injuring his right shoulder, will have season-ending surgery on Thursday. Kearns has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 17 with an inflamed right rotator cuff and had been in a 3-for-34 slump that dropped his average to .264 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI. The surgery will be performed by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek at Beacon Orthopaedic Center. The 23-year-old Kearns injured his shoulder in a May 21 game, when he collided with Atlanta Braves lefthander Ray King on a play at the plate. He was hitting .309 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs before the injury. Last month, Reds center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. underwent season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his right ankle.
