Kiley Bechler spreads ashes on mound

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The widow of Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler spread her husband's ashes on the mound and in the bullpen at Camden Yards on Sunday.

Steve Bechler died of heatstroke one day after collapsing during a spring training workout on Feb. 18 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 23.

Bechler appeared in three games with the Orioles last year and was vying to earn a spot in the Baltimore bullpen this season.

With several Orioles and team officials in attendance, Kiley Bechler carefully laid down the ashes about an hour after Baltimore's 8-0 loss to the New York Yankees.

"It's something I discussed with his brothers. They all agreed this would be the best place," she said.

A medical examiner linked Bechler's death to ephedra, an over-the-counter supplement he was taking to help him lose weight after reporting to spring training out of shape.

The informal gathering at Camden Yards included Orioles vice president Mike Flanagan, manager Mike Hargrove, pitching coach Mark Wylie, bullpen coach Elrod Hendricks and players David Segui, Jay Gibbons and Larry Bigbie.

Kiley Bechler's 4-month-old daughter, as well as Kiley's grandmother, were also at the memorial.

"It will bring a little bit of closure," Kiley Bechler said. "We can now move on and get past this part."
