He's a fighter Sore back and all, Wood expects to make next startPosted: Sunday August 17, 2003 3:02 PMCHICAGO (AP) -- Kerry Wood expects to make his scheduled start this week in Houston despite tweaking his back against the Dodgers. Wood gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in 2 2-3 innings Saturday in his shortest outing since Sept. 22, 2000. He left without talking to reporters, but the Cubs later said he had a sore lower back. His next scheduled start is Thursday against the Astros. "I have had it since I was 10 years old. It's just something I'm going to have to deal with," Wood said Sunday. Wood said he is usually able to get his back loose before he pitches but had trouble Saturday. "It has happened occasionally. Hopefully it's something that will calm down over the next three or four days and I should be able to go," he said. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Wood will be re-evaluated this week. If Wood cannot go, Shawn Estes will throw Thursday. Wood is 11-9 with a 3.62 ERA, and he leads the majors with 203 strikeouts.
