BIOGRAPHY: Agile and skilled big men are rare. That's why Smith has the potential to be a lottery pick in June. Doesn't have the bulk teams would like in a 7-footer, so his perimeter game projects him as more of a power forward than a center at this point. A first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection the last two seasons, Smith declared himself eligible for the draft after averaging 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds to lead the Rams to a 17-13 record this past season. His decision to enter the draft may have been due partly to the firing of coach Dale Layer, who Smith played under for three seasons. Smith, however, won't sign with an agent, allowing him to return to school if he determines he won't be selected high enough. He would have until June 18 to withdraw his name from consideration and retain his senior year of eligibility for the Rams, who he led in scoring and rebounding the last two seasons. Greatly improved his rebounding after averaging 7.3 boards as a sophomore. Raised his level of play against top competition, averaging 19.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in four games against Top 25 teams last season. Good perimeter shooter, with range from up to 18 feet. Can score inside and out, shooting 54.8 percent from the field for his career. Strong foot work, underrated passer in the post and an adequate ball handler for his size. Often had to carry Colorado State and tried to do too much, resulting in too many turnovers. Agility makes him a good help defender, but struggles against stronger players. Will have trouble becoming the rebounder and shot blocker he was in college. Will do best with a team that will give him time to add 15-20 pounds of muscle.
