BIOGRAPHY: This is the fourth year in a row Splitter has submitted his name for the NBA draft. Because of his age (22), he can't withdraw this time. Having to pay a big buyout to his Spanish League team previously scared off NBA teams, and may do the same this year, but his agility for a big man and defensive presence create a package that may be too good to pass up, even for some lottery teams. Splitter made the Brazilian national team in 2002 when he was just 17 and competed in the world championships, but began to really make an impression on NBA scouts three years later in the qualifying tournament. He combined for 41 points, 24 rebounds and six blocks in two medal-round games of that event as Brazil won the gold. His speed and ability to finish make him an appealing option in a league which has more and more teams going to up-tempo, fast-breaking offenses. His length and good footwork have helped Splitter become a very good defender, though he may need to add some muscle to effectively slow down the NBA's top power forwards. Sometimes shies away from contact and has yet to develop a back-to-the-basket mentality. Most of his points come in transition and on drives to the basket because his outside shot still needs work, further proven by the fact he's barely made more than half of his free throws during four Euroleague seasons. Like many big men coming to the NBA from Europe or South America, Splitter has soft hands along with competent passing skills but what separates him from other international stars is his defensive ability.
