Cole Aldrich
Round 1, Pick 11
Position: C
Class: Junior
School: Kansas
Conference: Big 12
HT: 6'11"
WT: 245
Biography: Aldrich is considered a potential lottery pick after opting to skip his senior season at Kansas. He was named to the Big 12 first team after averaging 11.3 points and 9.8 rebounds and setting a school record with 125 blocks. It's clear that NBA teams covet Aldrich because of his defensive ability. He possesses an excellent wingspan for his size, and that's why he can alter a game solely on one end of the court. Aldrich improved defensively in each of his three seasons, upping his blocks per game from 0.9 as a freshman to 2.7 as a sophomore to the sixth-best average in the country in 2009-10. For all the defensive plaudits Aldrich deserves for his size, smarts and positioning skills, there are definitely questions about him on offense. His production went down after he averaged 14.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and shot 59.2 percent as a sophomore. While it's true part of that was due to increased double-and triple-teaming, Aldrich has shown no ability to pass the ball out of the post with his assist total also dropping this past season. More disturbingly, his free throw shooting percentage dipped from 79.2 percent his sophomore season to 67.9 percent as a junior. Aldrich has excellent post moves and good hands for a big man, although he does need to prove he can consistently knock down short jumpers given to him by inferior defenders. While it's hard to envision Aldrich becoming a star at the next level and a perceived lack of aggressiveness may be a negative, he should develop into a starter who could enjoy a long career.
