Biography: Unable to meet eligibility requirements at Michigan three years ago, Benzing could make his debut in the United States at the NBA level. The forward from Germany has been compared to Dirk Nowitzki due to his similar size, offensive-minded game and ability to quickly get shots off. Benzing has a smooth release and an above-average jumper, but he needs to develop his post game. Playing for Ratiopharm Ulm in the Basketball Bundesliga, he has shown that he can run the floor and handle the ball with either hand, but he needs to improve his strength, rebounding and defensive abilities to succeed at the next level. Benzing fits the European mold of a big man who plays a perimeter game. Though he can shoot with range, his lack of athleticism makes it difficult for him to finish around the rim despite his size. Benzing averaged 15.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in Germany this season after he declared for the 2010 draft, then withdrew his name late. He suffered a thumb injury this season and his shooting percentage dipped from last season, when many scouts considered him to be a borderline first-round pick. Benzing seems unlikely to go in the first round of this draft after the drop in production, though it seems certain that a team will take a chance on him in the second round.
