Roy Williams: "[The team] did a great job in the [off-season] conditioning program, but they were dying out there for 25 minutes." Earl Richardson/Allsport

LAWRENCE, Kansas (AP) -- Kenny Gregory just went with the flow. Where the coach was headed early Saturday during "Late Night with Roy Williams" was anybody's guess.

About 15,800 Kansas fans were treated to Coach Williams joining his team and the Kansas women's players for a rap routine at the first official practice of the 1998-99 season.

Most hoped better things lie ahead for both teams.

"I didn't have a clue what that song was," Williams said. "I told Ryan [Robertson] that was the weirdest song I ever tried to dance to."

More picturesque was the dunking exhibition put on by Gregory in warmups.

"I was just going with the flow," said Gregory, who was slowed by back problems his freshman year. "That's just a sample of what I plan on showing this year."

The players entertained with skits and dance routines before scrimmaging for 25 minutes in the Jayhawks' first official practice.

"They did a great job in the [off-season] conditioning program, but they were dying out there for 25 minutes," Williams said. "So we'll get to work tomorrow in practice. We're anxious to get started."

Eric Chenowith, playing for the Red team, scored 14 points to lead all scorers. Luke Axtell, who will sit out the season after transferring from Texas, led the Blue team with eight points.

The Red and the Blue played to a 32-32 tie.
